MXene-reinforced metal matrix composites for wear-resistant and tailor made biomedical/biotribological devices fabricated by additive manufacturing.
ABSTRACT
Numerous medical devices are employed to treat or alleviate various diseases and injuries as well as anatomy and physiological process support. The design of functional contacting surfaces comes into focus to fulfill the desired functions adequately. This covers the articulating surfaces of the femral and tibial components in total knee replacements, or the femoral head and the acetabular cup in artificial hip joints as well as the interfaces between metallic bone fracture fixations or dental implants and bone or tissue. Medical devices’ failures or malfunctions often relate to processes/problems occurring in these interfaces, including tissue damage due to high friction, excessive wear, fretting, corrosion, and/or loosening. Therefore, the biotribological behavior of such systems plays a crucial role in prolonging their safe and reliable operation. In this sense, there is a need to further enhance the mechanical properties and biotribological behavior of the materials commonly employed in load bearing implants, dental implants, and bone fracture fixation applications – especially cobalt-chromium or titanium alloys. This can for example be done by employing protective coatings or reinforcing the materials with fillers……
